Paviland Far Far West

Wild winds whip across the clifftops here, and you'll feel properly exposed to the elements as you stand on this western edge of the Gower Peninsula. The name says it all - this really does feel like the far far west of Wales, where the land runs out and the Atlantic takes over.

Walkers will love the dramatic coastal path that brings you to this spot, though it's a fair trek from any car park. The views stretch endlessly westward, and on clear days you can see right across to Lundy Island. It's raw and windswept rather than pretty - think crashing waves and salt spray rather than gentle rolling hills.

Families with older kids who don't mind a proper walk will find it rewarding, but toddlers and pushchairs are a definite no. The coastline here is unforgiving, so keep well back from the edge. Weather makes or breaks the experience - come on a stormy day and you'll remember it forever, but thick fog renders the whole exercise pointless.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Gower Holiday Village or Bank Farm Leisure puts you within easy reach, though you'll still need to drive to a coastal access point and walk from there. Allow a good half day if you're combining it with other Gower coastal walks - the peninsula rewards those who take their time exploring its wilder corners.
