About Paviland Cave

Red Lady of Paviland's final resting place sits about 100 feet above Rhossili Bay, demanding a proper cliff walk to reach. This limestone cave gained fame when archaeologists discovered Britain's oldest ceremonial burial - a young man stained with red ochre, dated to around 33,000 years ago. The Victorian diggers thought they'd found a Roman-era woman, hence the misleading name.

Getting there means tramping along the coastal path from Rhossili village, then scrambling down a fairly steep section of cliff face. It's not technically difficult but you'll want decent grip on your boots and a head for heights. The cave itself is shallow - more of an overhang really - so don't expect vast underground chambers.

Archaeology enthusiasts will find this absolutely fascinating, especially knowing you're standing where our ancestors performed complex burial rituals during the last Ice Age. Families with older children who enjoy a bit of adventure will love the combination of coastal walking and prehistoric discovery. Younger kids might find the walk challenging and the payoff underwhelming.

Allow at least two hours for the round trip from Rhossili, longer if you're stopping for photos of the spectacular coastline. The walk is equally rewarding whether you're staying at nearby sites like Gower Holiday Village or Pitton Cross - both put you within easy striking distance of this remarkable slice of deep history.
