Getting to Parsonage Moor from Oxford means leaving the university spires behind for something properly wild. This Berkshire Wildlife Trust reserve sits quiet and unshowy, which is exactly why it works. You're looking at wet meadow and woodland - the sort of place where you notice things rather than have them thrust at you.

The walk here rewards patience more than pace. Spring brings fritillaries and orchids if you know where to look. Summer's thick with dragonflies around the wetter bits. It's genuinely one for people who like birds and plants rather than views from viewpoints, if that distinction makes sense. Kids will get restless after thirty minutes unless they're the pond-dipping sort.

The whole thing takes between one and two hours, depending on how much you're actually stopping. No fees, no facilities worth mentioning - bring water. It slots well into a park holiday based around Lincoln Farm or Hardwick if you want a morning nature walk before the campsite settles in. Not a destination on its own, but a solid option when you're staying nearby and want to escape the usual Oxford tourist crowds.
