Parndon Wood Nature Reserve

Ancient woodland in Hertfordshire that feels properly removed from the world, even though Sawbridgeworth is just down the road. Parndon Wood is the real deal if you want to walk among old trees without the tourist crowds - think gnarled oaks, dappled shade, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

The reserve itself spans woodland trails where you'll spot woodland birds, spot deer if you're lucky, and just breathe in the sort of air you don't get in towns. It's not dramatic or showy. There's no visitor centre with a gift shop, no grand viewpoint. What you get instead is a proper wood walk, the kind where roots catch your feet and you actually have to pay attention to where you're going.

Walkers and nature types will get the most from this - families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after 45 minutes, but older ones who actually enjoy being outdoors will love it. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly without rushing.

It works well as a morning outing if you're staying at The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake or Toad Abode nearby. Both parks are close enough that you can do the wood walk and still have the afternoon for other activities. Spring and early autumn are when it's at its best - fewer midges, better light through the canopy.
