The River Stort cuts through this stretch of Hertfordshire meadowland near Sawbridgeworth, and Parndon Lock Meadows gives you direct access to something most people overlook - proper working water. You're not here for tame park paths. This is a nature reserve that feels genuinely lived-in by wildlife, with the lock itself marking where the river gets managed for navigation. The meadows flood seasonally, which means spring brings migrating birds and wildflowers that most managed reserves have already mown down by mid-April.

It works best for patient walkers and anyone serious about spotting birds or insects rather than families after playground thrills. There's a decent circuit around the lock, though the towpath can get boggy even weeks after rain. Allow an hour minimum if you want to actually look at things rather than just pass through. The real magic happens in April and May when everything's in motion - you'll see species here you won't find in the tamer reserves nearby.

Frankly, it's the kind of place that rewards slow movement and binoculars. If you're camping at The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake just 1.5 miles away, or Toad Abode a bit further out, this is worth a morning visit before doing anything else. Free to access, and you can usually find a spot to park near the lock itself.
