Park Wood

Park Wood sits just outside Street in Somerset, a proper woodland walk that doesn't pretend to be more than it is. Dense trees, leaf litter underfoot, the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than traffic. It's manageable stuff - nothing that'll exhaust you, nothing that needs special kit. The forest floor is soft and forgiving, and in spring the whole place lifts with bluebells.

This is walkers' territory, really. Families with younger kids might manage a loop without complaint, but it's not a playground or a visitor centre with coffee and loos. You're here for the walk itself, for a bit of quiet time among the trees. An hour easily covers the main paths; two hours if you're the type to sit on a log and listen for a while.

For holiday park campers based at Orchard Farm or Bobsfield, Park Wood makes a solid leg-stretch between breakfast and lunch. It's close enough not to eat into your day, far enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. The summer months are lovely, though frankly any time the ground isn't waterlogged works. Winter brings its own appeal if you don't mind bare branches and mud.

No entrance fee that I can find, no opening hours to wrestle with. Just turn up and walk. It's the sort of spot you'll forget about within a week of leaving, but while you're in it - particularly on a quiet afternoon - it's exactly what you need.
