Park End Moss

Park End Moss is one of those Lakeland landscapes that creeps up on you - not the kind of place you'd plan a day around, but absolutely worth a detour if you're based near Kendal. It's a modest moorland area with that particular Cumbrian character: open, windswept, with patches of heather and bog that shift colour through the seasons. The moss itself is relatively flat, which makes it straightforward walking territory compared to the fells that dominate the region.

What you get here is space and quiet. There's something properly restorative about stepping away from the Lake District's busier honeypots - Windermere, Ambleside, all that - and just walking through upland country where you might not see another soul. It's the kind of place walkers actually enjoy, rather than Instagram-chase enthusiasts. If you're staying at one of the caravan sites within a few miles of Kendal - Kendal Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is your closest option - this gives you a proper morning or afternoon out without needing to drive far.

The moss itself is free to access, naturally. Allow two to three hours if you want to actually explore rather than just pass through. Best visited in late summer when the heather's at its peak, though it's worth seeing in any season if you appreciate moorland for what it is. Not a destination in itself, but a genuinely good addition to a Lake District holiday if you want to avoid the crowds and prefer honest landscape to postcard views.
