Park Coppice

The woodland around Park Coppice, just outside Dorchester, is proper old-growth forest - the sort of place where you actually feel like you've stepped away from things. It's managed woodland rather than wild, which means the paths are decent and you won't spend half an hour fighting through brambles to work out where you're going.

What you get here is straightforward: good walking through mature trees, decent light filtering through in summer, and enough space to actually hear yourself think. The forest floor changes with the seasons - spring brings bluebells and wood anemones, autumn turns everything golden. There's something about Dorset's woodlands that feels different from the New Forest or the Cotswolds - less manicured, more genuinely quiet.

Walkers will appreciate this more than families with small children, mainly because there's no playground or café tucked away at the end of the path. It's a proper walk, not a destination visit. You're looking at anywhere between an hour and a half to three hours depending on which way you go round.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Litton Lakes is closest at under three miles - this works well as a morning outing when you want to shake off the campsite vibe without going far. Combine it with a look around Dorchester itself and you've got a solid day. The wood fills a gap for walkers who've already done the bigger attractions and want something low-key and genuinely pleasant.
