Parish Church of St Mary & St Eanswythe, Folkestone

The twin dedication to St Mary and St Eanswythe tells you something about Folkestone's Saxon roots straight away. This church sits at the top of the High Street, its tower visible from across the town centre - proper landmark stuff. Inside, the medieval bones are still there, though Victorian restorers got their hands on it like they did everywhere else in the 1880s. St Eanswythe herself was a local seventh-century abbess, which explains why she gets equal billing.

It's the sort of place worth a 20-minute diversion if you're already in Folkestone, rather than a destination in itself. History buffs will appreciate the age of it, and the views down towards the seafront from the churchyard are decent. The town's changed plenty since medieval times, but standing here you can still feel the layers.

If you're based at Varne Ridge Holiday Park just 2.5 miles away, or one of the other parks scattered around - Greenhill Glamping and Black Horse Farm are both within four miles - combining a morning walk through Folkestone's old town with a visit here makes sense. Grab a coffee, have a look round the church, then head back to the park. Don't expect to spend hours. It's free to go in, though opening hours vary seasonally so ring ahead or check when you arrive. The town itself is where the real action is for families wanting arcades and beaches, but this church adds a bit of substance to a Folkestone visit.
