Paradise Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside York, Paradise Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon and wonder why you haven't been before. Ancient trees tower overhead, the kind that make you feel properly small, and the paths wind through thick undergrowth that changes character with the seasons. Spring brings bluebells in drifts. Autumn turns everything amber and copper.

It's ideal for families who want a ramble without the moorland hike, or for anyone needing an hour away from the city centre. Dogs love it. The paths are manageable but uneven in places, so proper footwear matters. There's something meditative about it - no gift shop, no cafe, just woodland.

Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time. Admission is free, which feels like a small miracle given what's nearby. Time your visit for late morning if you can - the light filters differently through the canopy then.

If you're staying at Cawood Park or York South's holiday lodges, both only a mile or so away, this works perfectly as a morning outing before heading into York proper. The wood sits well within a broader park-hopping weekend - you're close enough to the city attractions but far enough out to remember why you came north in the first place. Don't expect drama. Expect peace.
