Pant Hill

The climb up Pant Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, which is proper straightforward if you're reasonably fit. Once you're at the top, you get views across the Shropshire borderlands that stretch all the way towards Wales - on a clear day, it's genuinely impressive rather than the usual "we climbed a hill" letdown. The peak itself is marked and there's enough space to sit down with a packed lunch without feeling crowded.

This works best for walkers rather than casual strollers. If your kids are under eight, they might find the ascent a slog, but teenagers and adults will crack on fine. There's nothing fancy up there - no café, no visitor centre, just honest moorland and air. Bring water.

It's free to visit and you can do it in a couple of hours round trip, making it a solid half-day activity. The nearest proper town is Wrexham, about 10 miles away, so you're looking at a drive to get there. If you're staying at Foxtail Holiday Park nearby, this fits nicely into a wider walking plan around the area - you could string together a few smaller peaks and really make a day of it.

Go on a weekday morning if possible. Weekends can draw a steady trickle of locals, and the views are sharper before the haze builds up. Bring proper boots; the paths can be boggy after rain.
