Paices Wood Country Park

The woodland paths at Paices Wood are properly rewarding if you're after a proper walk without the crowds. It's a genuine nature reserve just outside Reading, the kind of place where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just plod around a managed park. The trees are decent - mixed woodland with enough variety to keep your eye engaged - and the paths wind through in a way that feels natural rather than engineered.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination attraction where you spend half a day; it's more the sort of spot you'd slip into for an hour or so, especially if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Ravenswing Park or Bishops Green Farm Campsite. The footpaths are clear enough, though you'll want proper boots if it's been wet. On a grey day when the light's soft through the canopy, it's genuinely atmospheric.

Bring binoculars if you're into birds - that's what the reserve's actually for - and go early in the morning if you want to see anything moving. The car park's small and fills quickly on weekends. Free to walk around, naturally. Don't expect facilities or a café; it's just trees and paths. Perfect if you want to stretch your legs between caravan pitches or break up a stay at Cherry Bird Country Park down the road. Just don't come expecting a destination experience.
