Paddington bear statue

There's a life-sized bronze Paddington Bear standing in Newbury, and it's genuinely worth a quick stop if you're passing through West Berkshire. The statue captures that familiar slouch - duffle coat, suitcase, and all - and it's become something of a local fixture since its installation. Kids absolutely lose their minds when they spot it, and it makes for a decent photo opportunity without being aggressively Instagram-baity.

The thing is, you're not going to build a day around this. It's a fifteen-minute job at most, a pleasant bit of town wandering rather than a destination in itself. Adults who grew up with the books will get a kick out of it; younger children might spend five minutes examining it before wanting to move on. It's free, obviously, and there's no faffing about with opening hours since it's just sitting there on a public street.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Cherry Bird Country Park is barely two miles away, or Bishops Green Farm if you're after something more low-key - Newbury makes a reasonable afternoon foray. The town has enough pubs and cafes to justify the trip without the statue being the whole point. Pair it with a proper walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal, which runs right through town, and you've got yourself a decent half-day out. The statue's become enough of a local thing that it's worth the detour if you're heading into Newbury anyway, but don't rearrange your itinerary for it.
