Owlacombe Burrow Rock

The rocky summit of Owlacombe Burrow rises sharply from the Devon landscape near Newton Abbot, offering walkers a proper scramble to the top and views that stretch across the surrounding moorland. It's not a long climb - most people manage it in under an hour - but it's steep enough to feel rewarding, particularly if you tackle it from the lower approach paths rather than the direct route.

Once you're up there, the rocky outcrops create natural seating spots and give the whole place a bit of character. On a clear day you can see across to the moors beyond, though I won't pretend the views are mind-blowing; it's more about the walk itself and that satisfying moment when you crest the top. Rock scrambling enthusiasts will find enough boulders to keep them engaged, but it's not technical climbing - more a kiddies-friendly clamber if you're bringing family.

The area works well as a half-day outing, especially if you're staying at Oakmoor Touring Park just down the road (adult-only, if that matters to you). Combine it with a walk around the wider moorland and you've got a decent afternoon sorted. Bring proper boots though - the rocky sections can be slippery when damp, and there's bugger all shelter if the weather turns. Go early morning to avoid the afternoon crowds, though honestly it's rarely rammed up there. Free to visit, no facilities at the summit itself, so pack water and a snack.
