Overhall Grove Moated Site

You'll find yourself standing in a field east of Huntingdon, looking at what amounts to a raised earthwork surrounded by a water-filled ditch - and that's genuinely all that remains of Overhall Grove. This is a moated site, a medieval settlement from around the 12th century, though what happened to the actual buildings is anyone's guess by now. The banks are still quite pronounced if you know what to look for, and the moat itself holds water seasonally, which at least gives you a sense of how defensible the spot would have been.

It's not a place you'll spend hours at. Fifteen minutes, maybe twenty if you're the type to sketch plans or photograph the earthworks from different angles. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile - moated sites are genuinely interesting as archaeological subjects - but casual visitors might find it a bit underwhelming. There's no interpretation on site, no visitor centre, nothing. You need to do your homework first or bring a good guide.

You'll want to ring ahead or check the Heritage Gateway listing before you go, as there's no fixed opening times and access isn't guaranteed. Admission details aren't advertised either. It's the sort of place you'd tack onto a broader walking route around Huntingdon rather than make a special trip for.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Crystal Lakes, Highfield Farm, or Cuckoo Fen are all within five miles - it's worth combining with other local walks along the Ouse valley, which has better-maintained trails and proper facilities.
