Overcote Fen Wildlife Area

Overcote Fen sits just east of Cambridge, a proper working wetland where you'll actually see wildlife rather than just read about it. This isn't manicured parkland - it's reedbeds, open water, and the kind of squelchy ground that makes you feel like you're somewhere real.

You're here for the birds, mainly. Winter brings wildfowl in decent numbers, but the spring migration is when this place really fires up. Warblers, waders, the occasional rarity if you're lucky. Bring binoculars and patience. If you're after a quick half-hour stroll, you'll be disappointed - this needs time. An hour minimum, ideally two if you're serious about birdwatching.

The path system is straightforward enough, though it gets muddy in wet weather, so proper boots aren't optional. You won't find cafes or facilities, so come prepared. It's also quiet - genuinely quiet - which means you either find that brilliant or slightly unsettling depending on your mood.

For families, it works if your kids are into nature observation rather than playground chaos. Keen photographers and birders will get plenty from it.
