Over Water

Over Water sits just outside Keswick, a proper little lake that doesn't get the crowds you'd find at Derwent Water or Thirlmere. The water itself is peaceful - good for a quiet walk around the perimeter if you fancy stretching your legs without battling tour groups. It's the sort of place where you might actually spot waterfowl without someone's drone getting in the way.

The lake works best for walkers and anyone after a bit of calm. Families with young kids will manage fine on a clear day, though there's not much in the way of facilities or activities beyond the walking itself. You're looking at a leisurely hour or so to do the full circuit, depending on your pace. The views back towards the fells are decent, especially in late afternoon light when everything goes golden.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Kestrel Lodge is barely a mile away, or Skiddaw View a bit further - Over Water makes a decent morning or evening outing. It's free to walk around, and there's something refreshing about somewhere so understated in the Lakes. Don't expect drama or the famous Instagram vistas. What you get instead is a genuine bit of Lakeland without the queuing, which honestly feels like a win when you're trying to escape the madness of the bigger tourist spots.
