Our Lady Immaculate & St Philip Neri Catholic Church

The Victorian Gothic facade on the quiet Lewes street catches you off guard - all red brick and pointed arches, looking rather grand for a church tucked away in Sussex. Inside, Our Lady Immaculate & St Philip Neri is surprisingly ornate, all soaring ceilings and stained glass that actually rewards a proper look rather than a cursory glance.

It's the sort of place where you'll spend longer than you'd expect. History types will appreciate the architectural details - genuinely well-executed Victorian Gothic work - and there's something quite moving about the quietness of it all. Not a tourist trap, just a working parish church that happens to be rather beautiful.

This isn't a day-trip destination on its own. But if you're staying at Dernwood Farm Glamping & Camping just up the road, or exploring Lewes itself (which is absolutely worth doing), you can easily slip in for twenty minutes. The church is free to visit, and you can usually get inside during the day without faffing about with opening times. Families won't find it thrilling unless they're genuinely interested in Victorian architecture, but for a quiet moment away from the campsite it's proper useful.

Best combined with a wander around Lewes town centre and the nearby castle ruins. Don't expect crowds - that's rather the point.
