Our Lady and Saint John the evangelist Catholic Church

The Catholic church just outside Sudbury is one of those proper Victorian red-brick buildings that stops you mid-walk. Built in the 1870s, it's got all the earnest Gothic Revival trimmings you'd expect - pointed windows, decorative brickwork, a solid sense of purpose. The interior is surprisingly light and spacious, with decent stained glass if you catch it on a sunny morning.

It's really a spot for church architecture enthusiasts rather than casual visitors. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you linger over the details. The nave and chancel follow the standard high Victorian plan, nothing revolutionary, but it's the kind of building that tells you something about 19th-century Catholic life in rural Essex - when this would have been a genuine act of faith to construct.

Calling ahead is sensible since opening times aren't fixed. Admission is free, naturally.

If you're stopping here as part of a weekend at one of the nearby glamping spots - Cranfield Retreat and Lake View Lodges are both within three miles - you could easily combine it with a walk around Sudbury itself. It's not a detour that demands your entire afternoon, but if you're already in the area, the architecture alone makes it worth fifteen minutes. The surrounding streets are quiet and worth a wander. Worth adding to a broader Essex itinerary, not worth planning a trip around entirely.
