Oughtershaw Barn

A modest stone structure tucked into the Yorkshire Dales landscape near Hawes, Oughtershaw Barn is what happens when archaeologists get excited about rubble. This is a Bronze Age burial cairn that's been partially dismantled and repurposed as a field shelter - basically what happens to ancient monuments when farmers need somewhere to keep their tools dry.

What you're looking at is the bones of something genuinely old. The barn itself dates to much later, but the cairn beneath it represents thousands of years of human settlement in this valley. It's not going to blow your mind with grandeur, but if you're into archaeology or walking the Dales, it's the kind of detail that makes a day out feel less like ticking boxes and more like actually understanding the landscape.

Really, this works best as a stop rather than a destination. You'll spend maybe twenty minutes here, tops. Walkers heading between Hawes and Hardraw or exploring the upper reaches of Wensleydale will find it worthwhile enough. Kids won't get much from it unless they're already interested in Bronze Age Britain, but history enthusiasts absolutely will.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted - it's out in the open on the fell. Getting there means either a decent walk or parking nearby and hiking in. The nearby Stablefell Holidays site (3.5 miles away) makes a decent base for exploring this part of the Dales, including the barn itself. This isn't a day trip on its own, but it slots perfectly into a proper walking holiday in the area.
