Otterton Mill

Water wheels still turn at this working mill on the Otter River, just outside Budleigh Salterton. You can actually watch the machinery grinding flour - there's something properly mesmerising about it, the ancient mechanics doing what they've done for centuries. The site dates back to Saxon times, though what you see now is largely Victorian, and the whole setup feels genuinely lived-in rather than museumified.

It's a compact visit - you're not going to spend more than ninety minutes here unless you're really into milling processes. The shop sells fresh bread and local products, which is worth a browse.
