Otley Plantation

The woodland around Otley Plantation, just south of Ilkley, is proper walking country - miles of managed forest threading through Yorkshire moorland that feels far more remote than it actually is. The plantation itself was established centuries ago, so you're wandering through deciduous and conifer mix that's had decades to settle into the landscape properly.

It's a straightforward forest walk rather than a marked tourist attraction with facilities. You won't find a visitor centre or cafe, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood. Bring a map or download offline directions beforehand. The paths vary from decent tracks to muddier stretches that get boggy after rain - not difficult, just occasionally underfoot.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's ideal if you want to escape the honeypots around Ilkley itself (the town's overrun most weekends) without driving miles. Allow two to three hours depending on your route and fitness. Spring and autumn are best - summer can feel a bit enclosed under all those trees, and winter mud is genuine.

The location makes sense if you're staying at Windmill Retreats, the nearby holiday park. You could knock out a decent morning walk from there and still have afternoon time for exploring Ilkley proper or heading up onto the moor. It's the kind of place that rewards knowing about - not somewhere to drag reluctant teenagers, but excellent for anyone who actually wants to walk.
