Orlestone Forest

The walk through Orlestone Forest, just outside Ashford, is one of those genuinely quiet escapes you forget Kent still has. It's proper woodland - mixed conifers and deciduous trees, decent paths, and enough space that you won't feel like you're treading on someone's heels. The trails wind through reasonably varied terrain, so it doesn't feel like walking through a plantation despite some forestry work evident in places.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination view or a tourist trap - there's no cafe, no visitor centre, no crowd. You come here to walk. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before the novelty of trees wears thin, but proper hiking types could easily spend a half-day threading the various routes. The paths are generally clear and manageable, though it can get a bit muddy after rain.

If you're staying at Broadhembury Caravan & Camping Park just down the road, or either of the glamping spots at Wildside or Longberry Farm, Orlestone makes an easy morning jaunt. It won't dominate your holiday plans, but it's the sort of place that breaks up a week well - better than another shopping trip to Ashford. Free to walk, obviously. Best visited when it's not raining sideways, which in Kent means you're working with a narrow window. Go early on weekends if you want the forest mostly to yourself.
