Orchardton Tower

A cylindrical stone tower rising from farmland near Castle Douglas, Orchardton Tower is Scotland's only round tower house - and that alone makes the short detour worthwhile. Built in the 15th century, it's a proper oddity: most Scottish fortified houses went for rectangular keeps, but whoever built this went rogue with a circular design that actually made it harder to attack from corners. The tower stands maybe four storeys high, solid and squat against the Dumfries & Galloway landscape.

You can walk right up to it across open ground - no barriers, no faffing about. The exterior is the main event; it's difficult to get inside these days, so come for the architecture and the story rather than expecting to climb spiral stairs. From any of the nearby holiday parks - Kippford View is closest at just over a mile away, with Coastal Kippford and Castle Point both within easy reach - it makes for a quick morning excursion before heading elsewhere.
