The converted studios on Orchard Road aren't what you'd expect from rural Aberdeenshire. Walk in and you're straight into working artist spaces - proper creative energy, the kind where people are actually making things rather than just selling postcards of things made elsewhere.

It's a working gallery, which means you'll find painters, sculptors, and makers at their benches. Some days they're chatty, keen to talk about their practice. Other days they're deep in concentration and you're just a pleasant interruption. The work tends toward contemporary stuff - nothing twee, though there's skill on display across the board.

Forres is the nearest proper town, about 20 minutes away, so this sits nicely as a midweek detour if you're staying at one of the local glamping spots. The Loft, just under four miles off, pairs well with it - both are the kind of places that appeal to people who want something beyond the standard park holiday.

You'll need maybe an hour here, longer if you get talking. It's not a rainy-day option - the studios have character, but they're genuine workshops, not weatherproofed tourist attractions. Go on a dry morning when the light's decent and the artists are likely to be in. Kids lose interest quickly unless they're already into art or watching people work grabs them. Solo travellers and couples will get more from it. Free to look around, though obviously they appreciate it if you buy something.
