Orchard Park

The reserve sprawls across Essex countryside just east of Cambridge, a working landscape where agriculture and wildlife coexist without apology. You'll find yourself wandering through orchards - proper old-fashioned ones, not the manicured sort - alongside meadows and woodland that shift with the seasons. Spring brings blossom and migrating birds; autumn turns everything gold and brings the apples in.

It's the sort of place that rewards slow walking rather than ticking boxes. Paths wind through different habitats, and you'll spot butterflies, woodland birds, and if you're lucky, deer moving between the trees. The orchards themselves are genuinely interesting if you care about heritage varieties and farming heritage - this isn't just pretty scenery, there's actual agricultural history happening here.

This works best for walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than families after a quick outing. You need at least two hours to do it justice, ideally more if you're the type to stand still and watch things. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Spring and early summer are absolutely the best times - late May when everything's blooming and the birds are vocal is proper lovely.

Stay at either Shepreth Mill or Pightle Farm, both within six miles, and you've got easy access to the reserve plus decent facilities. It slots nicely into a wider Cambridge-area walking itinerary without feeling forced or touristy. Worth the detour if you're already in East Anglia, though not worth a special trip on its own.
