OOF Gallery sits in Hertfordshire, just east of London, and it's one of those spaces that catches you off guard. The gallery showcases contemporary art in a refreshingly unpretentious way - no velvet ropes or hushed tones, just actual work that someone's bothered to curate properly.

What you'll find depends on the current programme, but expect installations, paintings, and sculpture from emerging and established artists. The space itself has that converted-studio feel - raw walls, good light, the kind of place where the art isn't competing with fancy architecture for attention. It's genuinely worth an hour, maybe longer if you're the type who reads every wall text.

This works best for people who like art but aren't interested in the V&A experience - no crowds, no gift shop nonsense, just the work. Kids will get bored unless they're already into galleries, to be frank. History types might find it less rewarding than a more established institution, but contemporary art enthusiasts will appreciate the lack of pretension.

If you're camping at Lee Valley Campsite just down the road in Sewardstone, OOF makes a decent rainy-day outing or morning visit before heading elsewhere. Theobalds Park and Fowley Mead are also within striking distance if you're basing yourself in the area. Check ahead though - opening hours and admission details seem thin on the ground online, so ring before you go. Worth the detour from London if you're nearby, but not worth planning a whole trip around.
