One and Other

Antony Gormley's One and Other stands in the grounds of Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Barnsley - a life-sized cast iron figure of a man, arms outstretched, facing out across the landscape. It's oddly unsettling at first, then rather moving. You walk around it, study the detail of the casting, and realise you're looking at an actual person frozen in time.

The sculpture itself is free to see, though you'll want to explore the wider park to get the most from a visit. Gormley's piece works best on a grey Yorkshire day when the light catches the iron differently as you move. There's no narrative plaque telling you what to think - you just stand there and make of it what you will.

It's excellent for anyone interested in contemporary art or wanting something beyond the usual park bench experience. Families with older kids will get it; younger ones might find it a bit eerie. Walkers doing the park trails pass right by it, so you'll naturally encounter it rather than hunt it down.

Allow twenty minutes to properly take it in, longer if you're photographing it from different angles. The nearby caravan sites at Mapplewell Meadows Farm and Broadlands Farm Touring Caravan Site make sensible bases for a few days exploring the park and the surrounding countryside. Yorkshire Sculpture Park itself is the real draw - One and Other is the jewel within it, but worth the trip on its own if you're passing through South Yorkshire.
