Oldside Workington

The old ironworks at Workington are a proper slice of industrial grit - massive Victorian blast furnaces and foundries that once kept the whole of northern England supplied with iron. You walk around the skeletal remains of what was, at its peak, one of the most important steelworks in the country. It's not polished up or prettified; the rust and decay are part of the story.

What makes it compelling is how much you can read from the bones of the place. The scale alone tells you something about the ambition here - those furnaces are genuinely enormous. You get a feel for the labour that went into it all, the noise and the heat that workers endured day after day. It's atmospheric rather than comfortable, which is exactly the point.

This works best for adults interested in industrial heritage or anyone teaching their kids about how Britain actually got built. If you're after manicured gardens and tea rooms, look elsewhere. The nearest town, Maryport, is just a few miles away and has its own maritime museums if you want to round out the history angle.

If you're based at Harbour Side Caravan Park or Greysouthen, both within five miles, Oldside makes for a solid half-morning visit - allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photographs. Go when it's not raining if you can; there's not much shelter and the metal work gets slippery.
