Oldpark Wood

Walking into Oldpark Wood feels like stepping into someone's back garden - except the garden happens to be several hundred acres of proper Sussex woodland. It's the kind of place where the canopy does most of the talking, filtering light into pale green patches across the forest floor.

The woodland sits just outside Chichester, close enough for a morning trip but far enough that you'll forget the market town even exists once you're under the trees. There are paths threading through, nothing too demanding, though the terrain can be boggy after rain so decent boots aren't a luxury. You won't find facilities or signage telling you where to go - it's genuinely woodland rather than a manicured forest park. That's either brilliant or annoying depending on what you're after.

Families with older kids or confident walkers will get the most from it. Little ones might find an hour enough before the lack of adventure playground equipment becomes obvious. Spring brings bluebells that look properly wild, not planted in rows. Autumn does that golden light thing through the branches. Winter is skeletal and atmospheric.

If you're staying at Haven Church Farm Holiday Village just down the road, this works as a proper leg-stretcher without committing to a full day out. It won't wow you if you're expecting manicured trails and visitor facilities, but as a genuine bit of working Sussex woodland on your doorstep, it's hard to beat. Free to access, as far as anyone can tell. Allow two hours to actually experience it rather than power through.
