Old St Conal's Kirkyard

The graveyard sits on a gentle slope just outside Sanquhar, hemmed in by old stone walls that have done their job for centuries. You'll find it easily enough - it's the kind of place locals know but visitors often miss, which is precisely why it's worth a detour if you're staying in the area.

What strikes you first is how peaceful it is. This isn't a manicured heritage site with interpretive boards and a visitor centre. It's a working kirkyard where people have been buried since medieval times, and the stones tell proper stories - faded inscriptions, weather-worn carvings, the odd headstone so old you can barely read the names. The kirk itself is long gone, but the grounds hold their own quiet dignity.

History enthusiasts will spend a good hour picking through the graves, photographing interesting stones and trying to decipher dates from the 1600s. Families with younger children might find twenty minutes enough unless they're genuinely into graveyards. There's nothing labelled, nothing explained, so you get what you bring to it - curiosity or indifference.

If you're based at Sunnyside Lodges for a few days, this is a proper morning walk. Sanquhar itself is a small working town rather than a holiday destination, but it has cafes and shops. The kirkyard costs nothing to visit and there's no official opening hours - you're just respecting a place where people are buried, which means decent behaviour and reasonable daylight. Free, quiet, genuinely atmospheric. Worth the walk from town.
