Old Spring Wood

The woodland here clings to the steep valleys above Holmfirth, a proper tangle of old oak and birch that feels forgotten by time. Old Spring Wood is the kind of place where you can hear yourself think - a genuine rarity these days. The forest floor squelches underfoot after rain, and the canopy is thick enough that you'll want to visit even on drizzly Yorkshire days when everything else feels grey and damp.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. The paths thread through the wood without fuss, and there's something satisfying about knowing you're treading ground that's been here for centuries. It's not a manicured nature reserve - you won't find interpretation boards or a car park with facilities. It's just trees and soil and the odd burst of bluebells in spring. Families with restless kids might find an hour stretches them; anyone after a quiet woodland walk of two hours or more will be content.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, though it's best to check locally in Holmfirth first. The wood pairs well with nearby Whitegate Leisure if you're camping in the area - it's only a few miles away, so a morning walk here before you shift camp isn't a bad shout. The Pennine moorland surrounds it, so you can easily string together a longer day combining woodland and hill walking. Bring proper boots and a map. The ground gets boggy in places, and mobile signal is patchy.
