Old Rothbury Hillfort

You'll find yourself climbing a proper steep bank on the outskirts of Rothbury to reach this Iron Age fort, and it's immediately clear why our ancestors chose this spot. The ramparts circle the hilltop, still distinct after two thousand years, with views that sweep across the Coquet Valley towards the Simonside Hills. It's atmospheric rather than showy - no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, just you and the landscape doing the talking.

The walk takes about twenty minutes from the village, longer if you're meandering, and it's genuinely worth the effort. Walkers will love it; the approach path is well-trodden and the summit rewards you with sight lines for miles. Families with older kids find it engaging - there's something about standing inside those ancient earthworks that captures the imagination better than any museum label could. Younger children might lose patience with the climb itself, though.

Free to visit, no facilities up there, so bring water and decent footwear. The best time is late afternoon when the light hits those ramparts properly and the valley cools down. It works brilliantly as part of a wider exploration - Whitton Glebe and Riverside Rothbury Holiday Parks are both within walking distance if you're based nearby, making it a natural addition to a Northumberland break. The fort itself doesn't need more than an hour on site unless you're really keen on the archaeology, but the views alone make the climb sensible.
