Old Mortality Tablets

Two weather-beaten stones standing alone on moorland near Hawick - that's Old Mortality's real claim to fame. They mark graves of Covenanters killed during the 17th-century religious conflicts, and they're exactly as sobering as you'd expect. The tablets themselves are fairly simple carved markers, nothing ornate, which somehow makes them more affecting.

Walkers get the most from this spot. It's not a "pop in for ten minutes" kind of place - the real draw is the walk across proper Borders moorland to reach them, the kind of landscape that makes you understand why Covenanters were willing to die for their beliefs. Allow a couple of hours if you're coming from Hawick, longer if you want to sit quietly and take in the views back towards the town.

Historically minded visitors will find it moving; families with young kids might struggle to generate much enthusiasm unless you're keen on moorland rambling anyway. The site is free and unmanned - just you, the stones, and the wind.

If you're staying at Stouslie Snugs nearby, this works as a decent half-day excursion when the weather's decent. Combine it with a walk around the broader Borders landscape - there's proper hiking all through this area. Timing matters: summer gives you dry ground and longer daylight, but spring and autumn mornings can be particularly atmospheric when the mist rolls in.
