Old Marsh

Old Marsh is a proper slice of South Yorkshire's industrial heritage dressed up as nature reserve. It's a lake born from old mining subsidence - the kind of thing that would've been an eyesore fifty years ago, now it's genuinely lovely for a walk and a sit-down.

The water's the main draw, obviously. You get decent views across it, and it's the kind of place where you'll spot waterfowl without needing binoculars or wildlife expertise. The path around it takes maybe forty minutes at a casual pace, which is spot-on if you're not after a full hike. Families with younger kids won't get bored for an hour or so, though there's not much to actually do beyond walking and watching.

It's free to visit, and you can turn up whenever suits. Best time is early morning or late afternoon when the light's decent and the place is quiet.

Geographically, you're only fifteen minutes south of Sheffield, which makes it ideal if you're based at Waleswood Caravan & Camping Park or Rother Valley Country Park nearby. Both are proper solid for a Yorkshire break, and Old Marsh makes a nice afternoon interlude without eating into your car journey time. Don't expect dramatic scenery or Instagram moments - it's understated, walker-friendly, and the kind of place that grows on you precisely because it's not trying too hard.
