The Old Lime Kiln sits just outside Budleigh Salterton, a low-key maritime town that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a proper look around. This is genuine industrial archaeology - an actual working lime kiln from centuries past, preserved where it stands rather than shipped off to a museum. You're looking at the physical heart of what kept Devon's building trade moving for generations.

What you get is a compact site with the kiln itself as the centrepiece, along with explanatory panels that walk you through how the thing operated. It's not a massive attraction - you can cover the whole thing in 20 to 30 minutes - but it's the kind of place that clicks for history types and anyone interested in how ordinary work shaped the landscape. Children under ten might find it a bit static, though the industrial structure itself has a certain appeal if they're into old machinery.

Admission details are thin on the ground, but these local heritage sites are often free or charge a couple of quid. Best to ring ahead or check when you're booking into Devon Cliffs or Ladram Bay, both within walking distance. Go mid-week if possible - weekends pull in the Budleigh crowd and the site's small enough that it feels busy.

It works well as a half-hour stop while exploring the Axe Valley area, particularly if you're already visiting other heritage spots nearby. The town itself has a proper pebble beach and decent fish and chips, so make an afternoon of it rather than treating it as a standalone.
