Old horse trough

There's a rather modest Victorian horse trough on a corner near Macclesfield that stops you in your tracks once you actually notice it. Most people walk straight past, but if you've got even a passing interest in how the countryside used to function, it's worth a five-minute detour.

These troughs were working infrastructure - farmers and travellers watered their horses here, which meant the trough was as essential as a petrol station is now. This one's well-kept for its age, with that distinctive cast-iron construction you see dotted about northern England. The detail work and the sheer durability of Victorian engineering shows in every weathered edge.

It's honestly more of a "ah, right, here's where history lived" moment than a destination. History buffs will appreciate the snapshot of rural life before motorised transport. Kids won't spend long here unless they're already into that sort of thing - it's not interactive or dramatic. But it sits perfectly well within a caravan stay at Eastwood End, just a couple of miles away, as part of a morning wander round Macclesfield's older corners.

Free to view, obviously. There's no visitor centre or opening hours because it's just standing there doing what it's done for over a century. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better for photos, and the town's that bit quieter.
