Old Edderton Church

The church itself sits quietly on a back road near Tain, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. What makes Old Edderton Church worth stopping for is the sheer age of the place - we're talking medieval foundations, though the building has been substantially rebuilt over the centuries. The churchyard is the real draw: it's scattered with old gravestones, some dating back hundreds of years, and there's a genuine sense of time having passed here.

This isn't a grand tourist attraction with facilities or guided tours. It's a proper local church, which means you turn up, have a wander round the graveyard if the mood takes you, and that's about it. The building itself is usually locked unless there's a service on, so don't expect to spend an hour inside. But if you're into Scottish ecclesiastical history or just enjoy wandering round old graveyards - and there are plenty of people who do - it's worth twenty minutes of your time.

Families with young kids might find it a bit dull unless they're already interested in old things. Walkers heading through this part of the Highlands could easily slot it in as a quick stop. The nearby caravan parks - Dornoch Firth (1.8 miles away) and Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park (6 miles) - both make decent bases for exploring the area, though honestly Tain itself has more going on if you want actual amenities.
