Old Brick Pit

The water at Old Brick Pit sits dark and still, framed by steep banks of clay and the skeletal remains of industrial workings. It's what happens when you stop digging and let nature take over - the pit that once fed the brick kilns around March has become something far quieter than its name suggests.

You're looking at a proper fishing lake, really, and that's where most visitors come for it. The banks are accessible in places, and the water itself is deep enough to hold decent pike and carp. Walkers cut through here too, following the paths that rim the excavation, and on a flat Cambridgeshire afternoon it's pleasant enough - nothing spectacular, but genuine peace. The surrounding landscape is bog-standard East Anglian fen, which means big skies and very little shelter, so wind can bite.

If you're staying at Knightsbridge Caravan and Marina Park just up the road, Old Brick Pit is a decent local walk rather than a destination in itself. Give it an hour, maybe ninety minutes. It won't thrill families with young children unless they're the type who fish or enjoy spotting water birds - herons and grebes work this stretch regularly. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile. Access appears free, though the site has no formal visitor infrastructure.

It's the sort of place that grows on you. Not March's showpiece attraction, but if you've got time and you're exploring the fens properly, worth the detour.
