Office Plantation

A proper working forest just outside Shildon, Office Plantation is the sort of place you stumble upon by accident and then keep coming back to. It's not a manicured country estate - this is a real commercial woodland, which gives it an honest, working feel that some visitors find refreshing and others find a bit rough around the edges.

The main draw here is walking. There are trails threading through the trees, nothing particularly challenging, but enough to let you disappear into the woods for an hour or two without fighting through undergrowth or navigating complex waymarking. You'll see mixed broadleaf and conifer, the occasional cleared area where forestry work's been done, and if you're lucky, glimpses of the wildlife that makes these plantations their home. It's not dramatic scenery - don't expect fell views or grand vistas - but it's quiet, which counts for something.

Families with kids up to early teens do well here. The trails keep youngsters engaged without exhausting them, and there's enough to explore that restless energy gets burned off. Serious hikers might find it a touch tame, but walkers after an easy leg-stretch will appreciate the simplicity.

Both Eden Grange Glamping and The Gables Pod Camping sit within a few miles, making Office Plantation a useful add-on to a County Durham holiday rather than a destination in itself. Go on a clear morning if you can - the light through the trees is better, and you'll have the place largely to yourself.
