Walk into Octagon Plantation and you're immediately wrapped in proper Essex woodland - all towering conifers and quiet paths that feel a world away from the surrounding suburbs. It's a working forest, managed for timber, but that doesn't diminish the appeal. The plantation's eight-sided layout (hence the name) creates a neat geometric pattern you'll spot on maps, though on the ground it just feels like a solid, manageable woodland to explore on foot.

The main draw here is straightforward: walking. There are decent trails threading through the trees, mostly flat and easy going, ideal if you've got children who need a proper ramble without the scrambling bits. The undergrowth stays fairly clear, so you won't be fighting through bracken and nettles. In autumn the light filters through in that golden way that makes you understand why people bang on about woodland photography.

Walkers and families with kids under ten will get the most from this. History buffs or adrenaline seekers should look elsewhere. It's free to access, and you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes pottering about to a couple of hours if you're thorough. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and come prepared.
