Ocean Lake

The lake itself is modest - a proper working water body rather than a tourist draw, set in the Medway Valley just outside Aylesford. What makes it worth knowing about is the walking path that circles it, giving you decent views across the water without needing to pay an entry fee or book anything in advance. It's the sort of place you'd stumble upon while exploring the area rather than drive across Kent specifically for.

The walk takes about forty minutes at a steady pace, and it's flat enough for anyone with reasonable fitness. Families with young kids will find it manageable, though there's not a huge amount of drama - no playground, no ice cream van, just water, trees, and the odd fisherman. That's actually the appeal if you're after some quiet time between bigger attractions.

You'll want to bring wellies in wet weather; the path gets muddy in patches. Spring and early summer are best when the birds are active and the banks green up properly. Winter can feel a bit bleak.

It sits nicely between Badgells Wood Camping - just 2.7 miles away and rated exceptionally - and Gatehouse Wood Country Park, which is 4.3 miles south. Both make good bases for exploring the Medway Valley. Ocean Lake itself doesn't demand a whole afternoon, but combined with a riverside walk into Aylesford town centre and an evening at one of the local pubs, it fills out a day well enough.
