Oakham School Chapel

The chapel sits at the heart of Oakham School's campus, and even if you're not here for the education side of things, it's worth ducking in to see what a proper Victorian Gothic effort looks like. Built in the 1870s, it's all soaring stone and stained glass - the kind of building that makes you feel small the moment you step through the doors.

What strikes you most is the craftsmanship. The woodwork is intricate, the light falls differently depending on the time of day, and there's a real sense of purpose to the design. It's not massive - you can take it in without it feeling like a trudge - but it's detailed enough that you'll spot something new if you look twice.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the architectural lineage here; it's a solid example of Victorian school chapel design, the sort of building that reflects what education meant to the Victorians. That said, if you're expecting it to be a standalone tourist attraction with visitor facilities, it isn't. This is school property first and foremost, so access can be a bit hit-and-miss depending on term time and events.

Oakham itself is a proper market town with some decent independent shops and cafes, so you could easily tack this onto a broader wander around the place. If you're based at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park nearby, it's close enough for an hour's outing. Worth the detour? If you're already in Rutland, absolutely. Go out of your way for it? Probably not.
