Oakham Castle

The first thing that strikes you about Oakham Castle is how incongruously massive it feels for a market town. This isn't some crumbling ruin lost in the countryside - it's right there in the middle of Oakham, a robust Norman keep that's survived nearly 900 years of English weather and political upheaval.

What you're actually looking at is the Great Hall, built around 1190, and it's genuinely impressive. The walls are thick enough to make you understand why they've lasted this long. You can walk around the exterior freely, which costs nothing, though the interior requires a ticket on certain days - worth checking ahead before you go. Allow 30 minutes if you're just having a wander outside, longer if you get inside and climb to the top.

Families with kids aged 8 and up tend to get something from it. Younger children might find it a bit of a static attraction unless they're genuinely interested in medieval history. Serious castle buffs will find it worth the stop, especially if you're already in Rutland exploring the broader area - it gives proper context to Norman power and architecture.

The town itself is pleasant enough, with decent shops and cafes. If you're staying at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park just outside town, it's an easy visit to slot into a morning. Combine it with Rutland Water nearby if you want a fuller day. Summer visits are preferable - winter can leave the grounds a bit windswept and bleak.
