Oakfield Glen and Bashfordsland Wood

The woodland paths here are genuinely peaceful - proper quiet, even on a decent day. Oakfield Glen and Bashfordsland Wood sprawl across Mid and East Antrim as a nature reserve where you can actually hear birdsong without traffic noise ruining it. It's the sort of place where walkers come to clear their heads rather than tick boxes.

The trails wind through mature woodland with decent understory plants, and if you time it right (spring or early summer), the whole thing comes alive. It's not a dramatic gorge or a waterfall spectacle - it's subtle. The appeal is in the trees themselves, the dappled light, and genuinely spotting wildlife if you're patient and quiet about it.

Walkers will find their groove here. Families with young kids might struggle if they're after something with more obvious attraction features - there's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, and the paths demand proper shoes. History types won't find much narrative either, just woodland doing what it does.

Larne is close enough for a morning session without faffing about. If you're based at Down to Earth Wild Camping nearby, this is an obvious choice for stretching your legs without needing to drive far. Allow two to three hours depending on how deep you want to go into the reserve. Bring waterproofs - woodland always stays damp longer than open ground.
