Oakclose Plantation

You'll find yourself walking beneath a proper canopy of mature trees at Oakclose Plantation, just outside Alresford in Hampshire. It's the kind of woodland that feels older than it probably is - dense enough to block out most of the sky, with good paths running through and the ground soft underfoot from decades of dropped needles and leaves.

This is a straightforward forest walk rather than a visitor attraction with facilities. There's no café, no visitor centre, no charge as far as we can tell. You simply turn up and walk. It works brilliantly for that reason. Families with kids aged eight and up will find it engaging - there's enough space to let them run ahead safely, and the trees themselves are interesting enough to hold attention for an hour or so. Serious walkers might find it a bit compact for a full morning, but it's ideal as a quick leg-stretch between other activities.

The nearest town, Alresford, sits only a few miles away, so it slots neatly into a wider Hampshire trip. If you're staying at The Spinney Caravan Park or Beechen Glamping - both within five miles - this makes a no-fuss morning sortie before heading elsewhere. The woodland doesn't demand much planning. Go early if you want peace, mid-morning if you want to see other families about.

Worth a visit? Yes, if you're in the area and fancy a proper woodland walk without the National Trust car park theatre. On its own it's too small to justify driving specially, but as part of a Hampshire holiday it's exactly the sort of local spot that stops the days feeling samey.
