Oak Wood

The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter and moss - proper spongy underfoot even weeks after rain. Oak Wood is a genuine woodland walk just outside York, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of fighting crowds at the tourist hotspots. The trees are mature, gnarled in places, and if you're there in autumn the light filtering through turns everything bronze and gold. It's straightforward woodland - no visitor centre, no cafe, just paths through the trees and the occasional clearing where you can actually see sky.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a dramatic gorge or a waterfall kind of place, so if your kids need constant spectacle you might lose them after an hour or so. But if you've got teenagers or proper walkers in your group, the quiet does something good. The paths are well-trodden and manageable, nothing that requires specialist kit. You could easily spend two hours here without rushing.

Based a mile or so away at Ravensdale Glamping Retreats, you're positioned nicely for woodland walks without being trapped in the city centre. It makes sense as part of a York-area break - do the city properly one day, then escape into something greener the next. Free access and open whenever you fancy, which is how woodlands should work.
