Oak Covert

The woodland around Oak Covert is proper Cotswolds territory - dense oaks rising up from the forest floor, dappled light filtering through even in summer, and enough peace and quiet to hear yourself think. It's the sort of place where you genuinely feel like you've stepped away from it all, even though Bourton-on-the-Water is only a short drive south.

This isn't a managed attraction with visitor facilities or entrance fees. You're walking through working forest, which means bringing a decent map or using your phone to navigate the paths. The terrain is uneven - roots, slopes, the occasional muddy patch - so it's better suited to older children and adults than toddlers in pushchairs. Give yourself an hour minimum if you want to properly explore, longer if you're the type who stops to identify trees and listen for birds.

It works brilliantly as a break from the Cotswolds' honey-stone villages and busy high streets. If you're staying at Moreton-in-Marsh Experience Freedom Glamping or one of the caravan sites near Bourton, Oak Covert is an honest woodland walk rather than a scenic destination. No views to Instagram, no tea shop, just trees. Walkers and families who want to let kids run around in a genuinely wild space will get the most from it. Fair warning though - it can feel a bit samey if you're not into forests, and there's not much to do once you've walked the perimeter. Worth the detour if you need a leg-stretcher and some fresh air. Less essential if you've got limited time.
