NWT Roydon Common

Roydon Common sits just east of Sandringham, a sprawling expanse of heathland that feels properly remote despite being within spitting distance of the royal estate. It's a National Wildlife Trust reserve, which means it's managed for wildlife rather than manicured for visitors - all the better, really.

What you get here is raw Norfolk heath: gorse, heather, and scattered pines across open ground that rolls gently with the landscape. The walking is straightforward and free, with several paths crisscrossing the common. It's not dramatic scenery, but there's something compelling about the space and the light across the heath, particularly in late summer when the heather flowers. Birdwatchers come for nightjars and woodlarks. Families with younger legs will find it manageable, though it's not a destination with facilities or structures to explore - it's purely about the walking and the wildlife spotting.

Allow anything from an hour to a full morning depending on how far you fancy wandering. Spring and early autumn are prime time, when the common is active and the weather cooperative. Winter can be muddy and bleak, though that's half the charm if you're after solitude.

If you're camping at Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site or any of the parks within a few miles, this is an excellent morning outing before heading elsewhere. It pairs well with a visit to Sandringham House itself if you're keen on the formal stuff - Roydon Common offers the complete opposite experience, which works perfectly for a day that wants balance.
