The forest sits just outside Cheltenham, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper ramble rather than a quick dash round. Ancient woodland with a real sense of being somewhere genuinely old - the sort of place where you actually feel the age of the trees rather than just reading about it on a plaque.

There are decent paths threading through, enough variation to keep walkers interested without needing a guide. The canopy's thick enough that it stays cool even on warm days, which is brilliant if you're visiting in summer. Families with kids who can manage a mile or two will get on fine - there's something satisfying about children in a proper forest, away from theme parks and manicured gardens.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the sense of continuity here. This isn't a heritage site with interpretation boards on every tree, but that's rather the point. It feels lived-in, working woodland rather than a museum.

If you're based at Winchcombe Camping & Caravanning Club down the road, Nutterswood makes for a solid morning outing - give yourself two hours to wander without rushing. Go early to avoid the afternoon crowd, especially weekends. There's a genuine quiet here if you time it right, though I'd say it's worth visiting whatever the season.

Not going to pretend it's a full day's entertainment on its own, but combined with exploring Cheltenham itself or other Cotswolds spots nearby, it's well worth the walk.
